Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered U.S. and state flags to be flown at half-staff in honor of two deputies who were struck and killed in a crash in Palm Beach County.
On Thursday, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Corporal Luis Paez and Deputy Sheriff Ralph Waller were struck and killed on Southern Boulevard.
Officials said the deputies were off the roadway, waiting on battery cables when a woman driving an SUV tried to pass a car before losing control and colliding with the three deputies.
Paez and Waller were taken to the hospital where they ultimately succumbed to injury.
West Palm Beach's WPBF reported the third deputy has undergone surgery and is stable but in critical condition.
According the a release from DeSantis, Paez began serving his community in 1988 as a corrections deputy before serving as a motor deputy for more than 20 years.
Waller served with the Royal Palm Beach Police Department before starting with PBCSO in 2008.
"These brave officers who made the ultimate sacrifice will always be remembered for their courage and service," the release said.
DeSantis ordered that the flags be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations and grounds through Palm Beach County from 3 p.m. to sunset on Thursday and Tuesday, Dec. 3.
