A Punta Gorda man was arrested in Massachusetts after being accused of assaulting a woman with a gun at a motel before leaving the scene.
On Friday at approximately 1:30 a.m., Officers with the Seekonk Police Department responded to a Motel 6 on Fall River Avenue for the report of a 9-1-1 hang-up call.
Police said when they arrived they found a female in one of the hallways who claimed she had been assaulted with a gun by a man, later identified as Corey L. Soares, 37, of Punta Gorda.
Seekonk detectives were granted a search warrant for the hotel room. Detectives investigated the scene where they said they found a loaded Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun.
An arrest warrant was reportedly issued for Soares.
Around 2 a.m., officers said they saw Soares enter a Panera Bread on Highland Ave. Officers said they engaged Soares while inside the restaurant, confirming it was him before taking him into custody.
According to reports, Soares drove away in his truck with a Florida license plate. Officers said the truck has not been found at this time.
Soares was arrested and is facing the following charges:
- Assault with dangerous weapon
- Domestic assault and battery
- Domestic strangulation or suffocation
- Firearm, possess large capacity
- Assault to Murder, Firearm-armed
- Firearm violation with 3 prior violent/drug crimes
- Ammunition, possess without FID card
