A Florida Gulf Coast University professor's home was found vandalized with a racial slur painted on the wall last week. The image left the professor terrified and scared after witnessing this in person, calling it a living nightmare.
Cape Coral police say this happened at the home on Northeast Sixth Avenue in reference to criminal mischief.
"After some initial shock, because it was like, what is this, it was like there was a war or something like that," Peter Ndiang'ui told NBC2. Because that's foolishness to destroy property. You don't gain anything; you will be caught. You're going to mess up your life."
The Cape Coral Police Department is investigating this as a hate crime.
"So there is some surveillance video that's floating around out there of potential suspects for this, we are again looking into this. Our Major Crimes Unit is taking this very seriously and working to make sure that the people behind this are held responsible," said Lisa Greenberg.
Over the weekend, FGCU students, staff members and Cape Coral police gathered to help clean up the damaged home. The professor said the damages would have taken him months to clean up himself.
"That was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in my entire life. I've not seen anything like it. I can walk in feeling good because I saw the love," said the professor.
