Lehigh Acres Christian School, which educates 120 students out of Lee Boulevard Baptist Church, may have to close at the end of the month.
On Nov. 1, the school received a cease-and-desist letter from the state of Florida Department of Health to stop using its well and septic tanks.
It says places with more than 25 people that operate for more than 60 days a year have to be on the public water and sewer system.
Robert Roper, pastor of the Baptist church and head pastor of the school, said they were only warned about getting an inspection after opening at the beginning of the school year.
They say the well and the septic tank were inspected, but then they got a surprise visit from the health department.
Roper said he has a list of plans to ensure the students are safe including testing the water by implementing a reverse osmosis system and getting the pumps tested twice.
"Some of the parents are very upset because we're actually operating today under an immediate cease-and-desist order issued by the health department. So, when the parents come in to the drop-off line, they're wanting to know, is it safe? They're wanting to know, are we going to get fined for having school when we were told not to have school?" Roper said.
Roper said he sent a mitigation plan to the Department of Health and the Department of Education within 30 days with a list of plans to comply with the requirements of the law.
