The mom of the surviving victim in the North Fort Myers shooting on Heck Drive in Suncoast Estates Saturday said her son is doing well.
Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies are still searching for the person who shot him and killed another person. The victim's mom, Ginger Lara, said her son's friend was the person who died.
Lara said her son will have to go through several more surgeries, and it will be a long road to recovery.
"He’s such a good person," Lara said. "He's loving. He's caring."
Lara and her family held hands and wiped away tears as they're dealing with unimaginable pain.
Lara's 18-year-old son was taken to the hospital Saturday in critical condition. She says he was shot twice in the face, chest and abdomen.
"They did say that when he got here, he was practically gone," Lara said. "He was dying. He lost a lot of blood. They did emergency surgery on him."
Lara said detectives told her her son and his friend were sitting in the car when another person came up to them and started shooting. LCSO has not released what led up to the shooting. Neighbors said off-camera they heard about seven to nine gunshots.
Neighbor Bobby Lee Moses said she was walking her dog down Heck Drive, like she normally does, when deputies responded.
"Cop cars were blocking this side off, cop cars were blocking that side off," she said. "When I was walking my dog, they came running with a canine, saying 'go back in and go back in,' so I turned back around and went back into my house."
Moses said she's been staying off of Heck Drive for a while.
"I walk my dog this way every day, like probably five or six times a day," she said. "I guess I won't be walking real far at night."
