The Cape Coral Police Department is mourning the loss of a retired K9 officer who spent 15 years protecting and serving the community.
Officer Todd Salmon served the CCPD from 1990 to 2005, most notably as a member of the K9 Unit. Alongside his loyal K9 partner, Axl, CCPD said Officer Salmon set a high standard of excellence that continues to define the department’s K9 Unit to this day.
Together, Todd and Axl were responsible for numerous criminal apprehensions in the 1990s, earning a reputation that made it clear crime was unwelcome in Cape Coral.
Beyond his accomplishments in the K9 Unit, Officer Salmon was a respected firearms trainer, known for his exceptional skills as a world-champion-level shooter.
CCPD said despite his expertise, he was celebrated for his approachable demeanor and his ability to help others improve their skills.
After retiring from the CCPD, Officer Salmon continued to serve. Only this time, it was for the country.
Salmon ended up taking on the role of a contractor training police officers in Afghanistan, further showcasing his commitment to law enforcement and public safety.
Officer Salmon was more than just a skilled professional — he was a friend and mentor to many.
CCPD said his contributions to the Cape Coral Police Department are indelible, and his legacy will forever be a part of the department’s history.
