"Opposites attract," Monica said of her best friend, Fernanda. "She's a mover and shaker, and I'm dragging my feet taking pictures."
The two moms live in Naples and became close friends after meeting through their kids.
But a trip far away from home brought them even closer together.
"Oh man, that trip was epic," Fernanda said.
The two booked a vacation to Machu Picchu, Peru, to explore the Inca citadel and culture. They fell in love with more than just that.
"There were these kids, and we started throwing them these snacks. They were giving us heart signs," Fernanda said. "Our tour guide said you know you guys just made their day because it's not always that they get to have a snack."
Monica and Fernanda describe it as an eye-opening experience.
"They don't have running water, you know, hot showers," Monica said.
The two watched as the kids in Machu Picchu were grateful with so little. It sparked a fire in their hearts.
On Dec. 13, the duo will fly back to Peru to donate toys, clothes, and school supplies to those kids.
Supplies donated by people throughout our Gulf Coast were filled in only two large suitcases.
"It gives you faith in humanity. It's not just me that feels like that there are other people that want to help and want a better world for everyone," said Fernanda.
Fernanda and Monica plan to keep their mission alive.
"Hopefully, we'll be able to expand," Fernanda said. "You know, Bolivia is right next doo,r and they're even poorer than Peru."
They hope their travels shine a light on the little things that often make the greatest impact.
"They are just so pure and happy with nothing. They live their life fully," Fernanda said.
"I can do something for someone," Monica said. "I can share this experience with a friend. I can tell my kids. Big world, small world, we're all connected. It's just a little tiny drop in the bucket of something we can do."
