The intersection of Periwinkle Way and Causeway Boulevard is the first major stop on Sanibel Island once you drive over the Sanibel Causeway. The intersection has been a traffic hotspot for years, especially as SWFL grows.
With cars coming from all directions, locals often face delays, especially during peak hours. Residents like Jean Whittaker and Ed Meyer, who live near the intersection, find the congestion particularly frustrating in the late afternoon. Since drivers must travel through the intersection to get on or off the island, traffic has been an ongoing challenge.
Back in April, the city hired traffic consultants to find a solution, with a roundabout being the recommended option. They say the roundabout could reduce congestion and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
During the city council meeting Tuesday, members discussed a potential roundabout and a plan for the intersection. While some expressed concerns about potential congestion in the roundabout itself, the council voted to move forward with a 30% design phase to gather more data.
Additionally, the council voted for the city manager to start talks with the county to explore ways to reduce congestion on the causeway. They also expressed a desire for a referendum to provide public input on the final decision. This marks a significant step in addressing Sanibel's ongoing traffic challenges.
