Punta Gorda’s City Council says it's taking its time in the search for a new city manager following the resignation of former City Manager Greg Murray last month. While the city had initially planned to discuss the hiring process at a council meeting today, the mayor decided to delay those discussions for now.
A few weeks ago, NBC2 reported on Murray's resignation letter, where he claimed issues of bullying and petty bickering within the city government. Since his departure, the council has been working to find a permanent replacement. However, during today’s meeting, Punta Gorda Mayor Deborah Lux decided to put the brakes on discussions.
"I think Dr. Reichert has been doing an amazing job here so far, so it doesn't hurt me to say let's wait a little bit longer," Lux said.
Councilmember Greg Julian of District 2 also shared his thoughts on the search, emphasizing the need for experience in specific areas.
"We’re looking for someone with strong experience, especially in managing hurricane-related situations, as well as business management skills to effectively run a city," Julian said.
He added that the city is even considering hiring a professional firm to help with the search.
In the meantime, Greg Murray will continue to be paid more than $75,000 over the next four and a half months, following a decision by three council members to adjust his contract and include a 20-week severance package.
The Punta Gorda City Council says they will revisit discussions regarding a new city manager at their next meeting in January.
