People gathered at Sands Park Saturday to talk about the future of Cape Coral's District Two at council member Laurie Lehmann's town hall.
Lehmann said her biggest concern is the people, and what they want the future of Southwest Cape to look like. One big concern that residents brought to her attention is canal dredging.
"The canal dredging I wasn't aware of at all," Lehmann said. "I'm not a boater. I didn't know anything about it, and now I've been made aware of it, so now I can look into it."
While Lehmann wants to help the people, it is clear the people want her help, too.
She said in the first week or so of being on council, she had over 100 emails.
"I think it's great," she said. "I want people to know 'Hey, I am your councilwoman. I'm here. If you need me, you call me.'"
At the town hall, Lehmann told people to write down their names and what issues they care about on a piece of paper.
Resident Phyllis Jenkins said she is a fan of this idea.
"You say, 'I talked to some people, and they said this,' doesn't fly in a council meeting," she said. "However, when you can put a name to a citizen, it carries more weight."
Traffic was a big topic on everyone's minds.
"We don't have a lot of traffic jams, but the longer I live here, the more I seem to see this," Jenkins said.
Resident Donald Apking said there may be a limit on what the council can do and resident Dave Kalish said different council members with different opinions may be an issue.
"It's difficult because if you and I were on the council and your thoughts were 100% one way and mine were 100% the other way, how would you work together?" Kalish said.
However, Lehmann said every issue is important if concerns the citizens, and she's ready to get to work.
Her next meeting will be on January 4th from 10 p.m. - 12 p.m. at Camelot Park.
