A natural sand formation near the Naples Pier is turning heads and raising questions. The unusual "mini cliff," as some have named it, stretches from the Naples Pier to about 14th Avenue South.
Visitors say they’ve never seen anything like it before.
"I thought it was a little strange," said Erick Bernstein, who was visiting the area. "I wasn’t really sure if this was man-constructed or if it was just erosion, but it’s a little weird."
Seasonal residents Gary and Carol Lafrance were also surprised by the drop-off in the sand.
"We’ve never seen anything like this before," Gary said. "We were here in September during Hurricane Helene, and shortly thereafter was Milton. I’m wondering if that had something to do with it."
However, the City of Naples says the formation isn’t storm related. They explained it’s just natural erosion caused by winter waves.
While the sand formation may look cool, some worry it could be dangerous for the elderly or children.
"[It's dangerous] Absolutely. Or young children if they come running. I wonder why they can’t at least level it off, bring in some more sand, possibly," said Lafrance.
But for the kids, the drop-off is a playground.
City officials say they plan to let nature take its course and let the sand level out on its own.
