The site of Lee County's oldest hospital may one day be a place to live.
We got a look Monday at early ideas to transform the property on U.S. 41 into a living community.
Lee Health said a developer could buy the hospital land, build apartments and bring in a hotel and restaurants.
NBC2 spoke to someone who lives near Lee Memorial about this possibility.
"Definitely not happy about that. For the simple fact that there is a lot of people in this area that utilize this hospital for more than trauma situations, regular medications and stuff like that. People are out here every day," said Andre Hustle.
Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson says the city is excited about the proposal since this is prime real estate.
"Some other things they talked about was housing, retail, possible government buildings. We kicked around the, the thought of, maybe moving city hall over there," Anderson said.
The new hospital will be built on Challenger Blvd and Winkler.
The city added a new roundabout, and that's just the beginning.
Staff at Lee Memorial will be working out of the old building until the new one is complete, which is expected to be sometime in 2027.
