Morning traffic on State Road 82 can be tiresome, but it was a different story on Thursday morning's commute for some drivers. Drivers say they were stunned by a bizarre sight: an overloaded vehicle piled high with furniture, scrap metal, and even a wheel, all tied together visibly with just rope.
“It’s insane,” Dave Gimbuzza said. “Chairs on there too? It’s crazy.”
The towering load drew comparisons to pop culture classics.
“It looks like the Grinch,” Cody Nierop said. “That’s like after he’s loaded all the stops and heads to Mount Crumpet. There’s no way I could stack it that high. That guy’s good.”
Others likened it to the Beverly Hillbillies, with one driver dubbing it “a Florida sleigh ride for sure.”
While the sight may have been amusing, it raised serious safety concerns. According to Chapter 316 of the Florida Statutes, any load carried on a vehicle must be securely fastened to prevent it from falling, shifting, or escaping. Florida Highway Patrol said if troopers spotted this vehicle driving on SR 82, they would pull it over immediately.
“This is just an accident waiting to happen,” Gimbuzza said.
Drivers along State Road 82 were left shaking their heads.
For Rico Ortiz of Lee County, the message was clear.
“Danger! Get out of the way,” he said.
While this overloaded spectacle may be an unconventional reminder of life on Florida’s roads, FHP’s stance makes one thing clear: safety isn’t optional.
