Residents react to brush fire erupting near...

LEE COUNTY, Fla. —

Firefighters battled a brush fire south of Whispering Pine Way and US-41 in San Carlos Park late Thursday evening.

According to the San Carlos Park Fire Protection and Rescue Service District, crews were on scene and battled a half-acre brush fire.

"I wasn't really concerned the way that it was going, but I knew it could turn bad at any, any moment," said Davis Ellis.

Ellis is one of the many residents who live in Sun Retreats mobile home park off US-41, he sat and watched crews battle the fire right in his backyard.

"We alerted everyone, knocked on doors for people that were asleep. it started about 8 to 8:30 somewhere around that area," Ellis said.

"The wind moves the fire rapidly. And when they're sparks and cinders blowing up, it moves it to other areas," he said.

I worry about hurricanes and tornadoes, I never thought I was going to have worry about a fire.

Donna Bernard thought she was going to lose her home so she gathered her personal items and went to another friends house. Others sat and watched firefighters battle the fire throughout Thursday night.

"I don't have a place up north, like a lot of people do," Bernard said. "This is my home, so it was scary."

While the fire was 100% contained before midnight, officials continued to monitor the area on Friday to make sure the fire didn't spark back up again.

There were no injures or damages to any homes, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
