Multiple Florida officials and agencies took to social media, sending their condolences after a Charlotte County deputy was shot and killed in the line of duty Sunday afternoon.
U.S. Sen. Rick Scott said in a post on X , "Devastated to hear of the passing of a Charlotte County deputy tonight. I spoke with @CCSOFLSheriff Prummell to let him know Ann and I are praying for his team and the deputy’s family tonight. Please keep them in your prayers."
Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Petronis said in a post on X , "Tragic reports out of Charlotte County tonight of an officer-involved shooting. As details unfold, please keep all of our first responders in your prayers. May God Bless these heroes."
Congressman Greg Steube, who represents the district, said in a post also on X , "My office is closely monitoring the reports of multiple shootings, including a potential officer-involved shooting in Charlotte County near the Sunseeker this evening. Please avoid the area to allow Charlotte County Sheriff's Office and Punta Gorda Police investigate. My prayers are with all of those involved in responding. God bless our law enforcement officers."
The Lee County Sheriff's Office took to X on Monday morning posting, "Sheriff Carmine Marceno and the entire Lee County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to Charlotte County Sheriff's Office on the murder of Corporal Elio Diaz during a traffic stop. Please keep Sheriff Bill Prummell and his CCSO family in your prayers."
State Representative of Florida House District 81 Yvette Benarroch posted on X Monday morning, "Heartbroken by the loss of Cpl. Elio Diaz, who was tragically killed in the line of duty. My thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. His sacrifice will never be forgotten."
The Charlotte County Supervisor of Elections said in a post on X , "With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Corporal Elio Diaz, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Our prayers are also with the entire Charlotte County Sheriff’s department."
The Cape Coral Police Department shared their condolences on X , "CCPD extends our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends & colleagues of Corporal Elio Diaz, as well as to the entire Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office family during this profoundly difficult time. Please keep Corporal Diaz, his loved ones & @CCSOFLSheriff in your thoughts."
The Florida Department of Highway Safety posted on X , "Our hearts go out to @CCSOFLSheriff following the tragic loss of one of their Deputies, who was killed by an armed suspect while conducting a traffic stop. We extend our prayers and condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones impacted by the loss of this brave Florida hero."
St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson posted on X , "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Corporal Elio Diaz during this difficult time. Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Bill Prummell reports that Corporal Elio Diaz was shot and killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop. The killer, a 24 year old male, was shot and killed by a deputy. Elio leaves behind a family, including children. He's been on the force since 2013."
According to Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, shortly after 3 p.m. on Sunday, Charlotte County Deputy Cpl. Elio Diaz pulled over a white pickup truck for a traffic stop at a Chevron gas station at 4968 Tamiami Trail, across from Sunseeker Resort.
During the stop, Prummell said Andrew Mostyn Jr., 24, pulled out a rifle and shot Diaz.
Diaz was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
