The Brevard County Sheriff's Office is investigating Tuesday after an early morning shooting by a deputy left one person dead.
According to an update from Sheriff Wayne Ivey, deputies responded to Egret Lake Way in Viera around 2:46 a.m. after a family in panic fled to their neighbor's home for safety and called 911.
The sheriff's office said a man had threatened a woman with a firearm and knife.
Brevard County deputies were able to make contact with the man still in the home. According to the sheriff, the man told deputies it was "game over," adding that they would have to come inside and shoot him.
About an hour later, the man reportedly walked outside with a gun and refused to listen to further de-escalation commands from officials. When he raised his weapons at the deputies, the sheriff said a deputy was forced to fire.
The man was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
According to Ivey, this was a "suicide by cop" incident.
"While my heart goes out to those who are struggling with a mental health disorder, it doesn't give them the right to put our deputies' lives at risk," Ivey said. "If you point a gun at one of my deputies, you just guaranteed yourself a trip to the hospital at the very least, more likely the morgue."
The sheriff said no deputies were injured during this incident.
Ivey said they will be conducting a full investigation into the shooting while the deputy involved remains on administrative leave.
At this time, the person killed has not been identified.
