Charlotte County is coming together to set up fundraisers to help the Diaz family as they mourn the loss of Sgt. Elio Diaz.
“As far as to the Diaz family, our hearts go out to them,” Rob Wilson, vice president of the Deep Creek Civic Association, said. “We are just heartbroken over just everything, and we truly love them.”
It has been 72 hours since Diaz was shot and killed by Andrew Mostyn.
Minutes later, Mostyn was shot by deputies after he tried to pull out his rifle a second time.
“This community supports our law enforcement,” Wilson said. “We're appreciative of having them here. We hate that these tragedies happen.”
The Deep Creek Civics Association has set up eight donation spots all around Charlotte County.
“We're trying to spread out to where people will be mostly in the community and be able to see this,” he said.
They are not the only ones who have put together a fundraiser for the Diaz family.
So has Charlie Foxtrot Brewery founder Nicholas York.
“This isn't going to help relieve that pain, but hopefully, it helps them move forward and continue to deal with the grief as they can,” York said. “Moving forward, this is just our small contribution. But if they need any support down the road, just let us know. We're with them.”
Eddie Canillas, owner of Pioneer Cuts, is inviting you to come to his barbershop on Dec. 28 to help support the Diaz family.
“I'm going to do a fundraiser. Whatever haircuts we give, I'm going to donate 100% of the proceeds to the Diaz family,” he said. “I'd also like to let it be known for the public to drop off any donations. Feel free to drop off money checks. You don't have to necessarily come in for a haircut.”
Donations from Deep Creek will be delivered to the family this Monday, and funds collected from Charlie Fox Trot will be delivered after Christmas.
