The Chevron gas station where Sgt. Elio Diaz tragically lost his life on Sunday has become a beacon of support for his family and the community.
Steven Dykstra, a sales associate at the Chevron station, says the site has transformed into a place of remembrance and support, with people coming together from afar to honor Diaz.
"This is a big world, big support, everybody around all of from Northport to Punta Gorda," Dykstra said.
Dykstra has seen firsthand the community’s generosity. Since Diaz's death, people have been donating to a bright orange bucket at the gas station.
"I mean, people are just donating what, pennies up to, like, $50 bills," Dykstra explained.
According to the station, nearly $1,000 has been collected since Monday, with every dollar going directly to Diaz's family.
As the gas station rallies behind the deputy's family, its employees have also received an outpouring of gratitude for their actions on the day of the tragedy.
Dykstra shared a touching moment involving his co-worker, Michelle Pardo, who tried to save the deputy after the shooting.
"A lady came in yesterday, walked in with her son, gave a bouquet of flowers, gave it to her, and then she just left. Just saying thank you. Where people come in, ask to speak to her. We've had a few cops off duty come in off duty today asking to speak to her how she's doing," he said.
Even Rick Scott's secretary sent Michelle a note acknowledging the Chevron team’s efforts.
Dykstra expressed hope for healing within the community.
"You don't see much like that. You see, for like county, but multiple counties is really cool," he said.
