A Sarasota man is facing 10 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor in Lee County.
According to the Department of Justice, Javier Chavez, 34, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to attempted enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity and attempted transfer of obscene matter to a minor.
According to court documents, on May 15 and 16, Chavez communicated with an undercover law enforcement officer who was posing as both a 14-year-old girl and her mother.
After learning the girl's age, Chavez reportedly engaged in sexually explicit conversation with the girl and sent her explicit videos of himself.
Chavez was arrested by the Lee County Sheriff's Office when he arrived at a home in Lee County with the intention of engaging in sexual activity with the girl.
From May 15-18, undercover officials with LCSO posed as minors on social media platforms and websites to target adults seeking to exploit child victims.
Chavez was arrested as a part of that sting operation conducted by LCSO.
Chavez faces a minimum penalty of 1 year in prison with the possibility of a life sentence.
A sentencing date has not been scheduled at this time.
