The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office is holding a press conference Thursday morning to release new information into what happened when Sgt. Elio Diaz was killed in the line of duty.
The sheriff's office states they will explain what unfolded Sunday, Dec. 15, and how they found Andrew Mostyn, 24, the man accused of shooting and killing Diaz.
According to Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell, shortly after 3 p.m., Diaz pulled over a white pickup truck for a traffic stop at a Chevron gas station at 4968 Tamiami Trail, at the base of the Barron Collier Bridge, just north of Punta Gorda.
During the stop, Prummell said Mostyn pulled out a rifle and shot Diaz.
Diaz was taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
After a manhunt for Mostyn, deputies found him and his pickup truck at a Popeyes restaurant on Kings Highway near I-75.
As deputies approached the suspect's pickup, they say he reached for a rifle, and a deputy opened fire with a shot to the head.
Mostyn was flown to the hospital, where he also died from his injuries.
CCSO said they will present the facts of the case and visual evidence in the press conference on Thursday at 11 a.m.
