The Cape Coral man accused of killing an 80-year-old woman after crashing his car into "That BBQ Place" will appear in court again on January 14, 2025.
Cody Curtis, 24, is facing multiple charges including DUI manslaughter after being accused of killing Marylou Sharp on April 13.
Curtis appeared in court on Thursday morning for a scheduled plea hearing. His attorney says this is a complicated case and doesn’t feel comfortable taking a plea this quickly.
According to reports, Curtis was driving a 1992 Nissan when he drove off the road and into people sitting in the outside dining area of the restaurant.
Reports state three people were injured and hospitalized with serious injuries, and one person was treated for minor injuries.
Curtis pleaded not guilty, and requested a new lawyer after claiming his current defender said, "all DUI manslaughter cases deserve to rot in prison."
After appearing in court, the judge denied Curtis' request to switch counsel because his statement was "not credible."
Curtis was granted a new attorney the next day.
