The Punta Gorda Police Department is warning people about "brushing scams" this holiday season.
According to the police department, these scams happen when someone receives a package with items they did not order.
Sometimes, the goal is to use your information to write fake positive reviews online to boost a product rating.
PGPD states a more serious scan variation contains a QR code inside the package. When the person opens the package and scans the QR code, they are directed to a phishing website.
This allows the sender to access the contents of your phone, putting your personal information at risk.
If you get a package that you think could be a brushing scam, here are some ways to protect yourself, according to the PGPD:
- Do not pay for the package
- Mark the package "return to sender"
- Report the incident to the listed retailer
- Monitor your credit reports for suspicious activity
- Change your password if you have an account with the listed retailer on the package
