Florida Department of Transportation crews will take a break this holiday season, pausing construction work across Southwest Florida to help drivers reach their destinations safely.
One of several key projects on hold is the widening of Littleton Road near U.S. 41. Crews have been expanding Littleton Road from the Corbett Road roundabout east to U.S. 41, turning a two-lane route into three lanes with a center left-turn lane and landscaped planting islands.
Construction there is expected to continue through 2025.
Meanwhile, the Caloosahatchee Bridge project will create an 8-foot-wide pedestrian lane for walking and bicycling.
Although many drivers expressed frustration during the bridge’s temporary closure — which connects North Fort Myers to downtown Fort Myers — the bridge has since reopened.
Another major effort is the Corkscrew Road widening project, currently in Phase Two. It will expand Corkscrew Road to four lanes from Bella Terra Boulevard to Alico Road and include a new traffic signal at the intersection of Alico and Corkscrew roads.
In addition, work continues on Ortiz Avenue and Colonial Boulevard, where Ortiz Avenue is being widened from two lanes to four. Construction there is projected to wrap up by 2026.
All of these improvements aim to accommodate Southwest Florida’s growth by adding more room on the roads. FDOT will resume construction on Jan. 4, so officials encourage drivers to enjoy smoother travel while the temporary pause is in place.
