Friends and neighbors are mourning the loss of a Lehigh Acres woman who was shot and killed on Monday, leaving behind a child just days before Christmas.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the shooting occurred along Nora Avenue on Monday. Detectives established probable cause to arrest the suspect for one count of second-degree murder and one count of battery on a person 65 or older.
Deputies attempted to arrest a suspect related to the shooting at a house along 9th Street Southwest on Tuesday.
During a standoff outside the home on
9th Street SW,
deputies announced, "We have a warrant. Come outside with your hands up."
Upon entering the residence, deputies say they discovered the body of a man who deputies believe had taken his own life. They say no one else was inside the home.
Sheila Galindo Rodriguez, who lives on the street where the deadly shooting on Nora Avenue took place, said it's an unbelievable tragedy.
"To have so close a person who is capable of killing, that is not so easy. Well, it gives you that nerve and that feeling, like, 'Oh, my God, what would happen,'" she said.
Friends of the woman killed in the shooting are grappling with the shocking news.
"I imagine the family is having a bad time. My condolences to the family," Damas said. "But you know, we don't have any other information. I just found out what happened, and it is a shame."
Sheriff Carmine Marceno commended his deputies for their investigative work and their efforts to provide the victim's family with some closure.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family suffering from an unimaginable loss this Christmas,” Marceno said. “This senseless act, and subsequent incident that followed is unfortunate and devastating to our community as a whole. I’m proud of my family members who worked tirelessly over the last 30 hours to conduct a thorough investigation, which ultimately provided some form of closure to the victim’s family today.”
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it could not confirm the names of the victim or the shooter, citing Marsy’s Law, which protects the privacy of crime victims.
