Hundreds of people gathered at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church in Lehigh Acres this Christmas to enjoy a special holiday meal, thanks to the dedicated volunteers of the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club. The community event, which has been a tradition for 18 years, offers a free meal to anyone in need, ensuring that no one has to go without a festive feast on Christmas Day.
The Rotary Club served a variety of delicious dishes, including ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, sweet potatoes and, of course, pumpkin pie. Volunteers like Edward Buff explained that the event is intentionally held on Christmas Day to make the holiday feel special for those in need. “We’ve never turned away anybody without a meal,” Buff said, emphasizing the club’s commitment to helping the community.
The warmth of the event was evident as volunteers like 12-year-old Avalynn Doyle, who has made this a family tradition, served meals with smiles. “It’s really fun, like talking to the people, meeting them and helping them,” said Doyle, who has been volunteering with her family since moving to the area.
Mykayla Sarmiento, another young volunteer, reflected on the importance of giving back, especially during the holidays. “I know there are people who don’t have meals or family to eat with. I feel that I still need to give back to them,” Sarmiento shared, encouraging others to volunteer in the future. “Come volunteer next Christmas,” she said.
This event is a reminder that the holiday season is not just about receiving but about giving to those who need it the most. And for the volunteers of the Lehigh Acres Rotary Club, the true spirit of Christmas is found in acts of kindness and community service.
