Cape Coral residents sprang into action Tuesday to rescue a woman trapped in her car after crashing into a canal Friday evening.
Kyle Lambert is a neighbor who aided in the rescue near SW 11th Place and Gleason Parkway. He said he and three others, including two teenagers, worked together to free the woman after she struggled to open the passenger door.
Lambert opened the rear door to pull her out and bring her to safety.
Pieces of the car were still visible near the canal the following day.
“There were people watching, but there were also people helping out, grabbing towels and trying to translate,” Lambert said, adding that the collaborative effort was “very heartfelt.”
Residents used a translation app to communicate with the woman, who spoke Spanish, and asked if anyone else was in the car.
Cape Coral police confirmed there were no additional passengers and stated the accident is not believed to be alcohol- or drug-related.
The woman suffered no serious injuries and was able to reunite with her family the same evening.
“I’m grateful that she wasn’t injured more,” Lambert said. “If she had been unconscious, it could have been much riskier.”
Police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
