It's the age of computer-operated cars, and with that comes people trying to hack them.
Fort Myers police arrested 17-year-old Christopher Davis for the crimes at Westchase Apartments.
They say he stole someone's Kia on Dec. 19.
"He got the vehicle back. He did have ignition damage, but he got the vehicle back with nothing else," Det. Justin Jaehn.
Jaehn said Davis broke into five other cars at the same apartment complex that night and at least 20 cars in the past with the intent to steal them.
"Unfortunately, it is a trend on social media right now. But due to all the resources we have, they think they're going to get away with it, and they don't," Jaehn said.
Thieves look for models with turn-key ignition rather than push-button starters.
Kia officials talked about what you can do to protect your car.
"Kia has a program that we have to install in the vehicle for the customer not to worry about the future of this. It is an easy fix," said Tim Blanchette, service manager at Kia in Fort Myers.
FMPD, Kia and Hyundai employees urge people to take their cars to the dealership so they can get a system update to block potential thieves from getting into their car.
