A thick and unusual fog hanging over Fort Myers Beach made it dangerously difficult to see on New Year's Eve.
Some feared the town's fireworks show would be canceled if the haze didn't clear.
For jet ski and parasailing companies, it was a frustrating and costly day. One well known business by the Pink Shell, Holiday Watersports, told NBC2 they lost around $3,000 in revenue because it was too risky to rent out their jet skis.
"We want to make sure everybody's safe and we can't see you, you can't see us," said Austin Jameson. "It impacts us a lot. Honestly, this is a big point of revenue, especially with the winter break. This is one time of the year where we kind of try to make a staple before season..."
Some boat rental companies also turned customers away or rescheduled trips due to the fog.
Still, restaurants and resorts were busy on the beach today, and many families were not letting the weather cloud their beach day.
"We were just talking about how strange the beach feels right now. Kind of apocalyptic. And, can't really see much further than a few feet away," said Tracey Whitten, on vacation with her family from Illinois. "We hope that the sky will clear out and we're going to get to see some fireworks. But if not, we've got lots of friends and family and food. So we'll we'll make the most of it."
The town says the annual firework show is still on. The fireworks start around midnight near the pier. The Matanzas Bridge will close to traffic at 11 p.m. and open back up after 1 a.m.
