Steve Iglesia Jr. shed many tears while wearing an antisuicide smock in court Monday night.
The 25-year-old is accused of killing his own brother, Christopher Iglesia. However, family members say it was a huge mistake.
The men's father, Steve Iglesia Sr. , told us Friday that the younger Steve has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder since returning from the military.
"Both my boys were good. Steve wasn't a monster like they're saying. He was a very good young man. I'm just confused what happened," said Iglesia Sr.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office says on New Year's night, the family had an argument over dinner at Casa Blanca Restaurant. That fight spilled into the parking lot off Daniels Parkway. According to reports, Iglesia Jr. shot Christopher Iglesia in the head and killed him. On Monday, a detective told the court what deputies saw when they arrived on the scene.
"They found Mr. Iglesia on the scene ... He was on his knees, had his hands above his head and was saying, 'It was me. I did it. I shot him," said the detective.
The defense argued Iglesia Jr. could have been defending himself. They also pointed out he has a family back home and no prior criminal record. However, the state still believed he be held without bond.
"He shot and killed his brother. If he would do that to his own brother, and said he did it, the court should have substantial concern whether he poses a further risk to the rest of the community," said the state attorney.
The judge ultimately decided Iglesia Jr. be held without bond. His next court date is in February.
