>> ALL RIGHT. LAUREN PROCEDURE, THIS THIS NEW YEAR NOW MEANS THAT MANY ORGAN BETTER THEMSELVES. WE ARE RIGHT. HOW COULD WE FOR SAKE, ARIF, TAKE CARE OF OUR MIND WHEN MAKING THESE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS AND ALSO JUST STICKING TO NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS. JANUARY IS NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH WELLNESS WALK THIS MORNING. WE HAVE MISTY PER JOINING US FROM A BEHAVIORAL HEALTH. AND SHE'S GETTING US MORE ON HOW WE CAN SUPPORT OUR MENTAL HEALTH WHILE REACHING YOUR NEW YEAR'S GOALS. AND MISSY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR COMING IN. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU. THANK YOU. OKAY. SO MANY PEOPLE ALWAYS KICK OFF THE NEW YEAR. WITH THE NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE FOR THEIR MENTAL HEALTH PURPOSES KICK OFF A NEW YEAR? >> JUST LIKE I THINK IF YOU ARE AND IDENTIFYING SOMETHING THAT YOU NEED TO SORT OF WORK ON NEW YEAR'S IS KIND OF THE TIME THAT WE SORT OF. FIGURE OUT THAT WE WANT TO DO THAT. AND SO THEY SAY THAT ONLY 9% OF PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY SET A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION WILL FOLLOW THROUGH A SET. AND THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT REASONS WHY A LOT OF THE TIMES WE SET THE BAR TOO WE REALLY JUST WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR GOALS ARE REALISTIC AND THAT THEIR CHIEF ALL AND THAT, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A PLAN TO SORT OF SET THE SINGS OUT HOW ANYTHING PEOPLE ACTUALLY MAKE IT. >> FOLLOWING THEIR GOAL BEFORE, THAT'S KIND OF PETERS OUT? >> WELL, I THINK IT JUST DEPENDS ON HOW MOTIVATED THEY WERE AND WHAT THEIR GOAL WAS. RIGHT. SO IF I'M A PERSON WHO DOES NOT EXERCISE AT ALL, AND I SAY I'M GONNA START EXERCISING 7 DAYS A WEEK. THAT'S NOT GONNA THAT. THAT THAT'S NOT GONNA WORK. SO I MEAN, THE BIGGEST THING TO REMEMBER, IS THERE YOUR GOALS SO YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE A LOOK AND SAY, WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT, MAYBE THAT WAS A LITTLE BIT, YOU KNOW, AMBITIONS HERE. SO MAYBE I CAN STEP BACK AND REEVALUATE AND MAYBE START SMALL AND THEN YOU CAN ALWAYS GO SEEING SOMETHING HERE CALLED SMART GOALS. ARE BEING AN ACRONYM. CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT? YEAH. SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S SOMETHING THAT'S SPECIFIC THERE. MEASURABLE RIGHT THERE. CHIEVO BALL AND WE BASICALLY HAVE A PLAN TO DO IT RIGHT. AND WE HAVE A TIME FRAME, YOU KNOW, IN WHICH WE WANT TO DO BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU MET YOUR GOAL IF YOU DON'T HAVE A SPECIFIC PLAN IN PLACE, IS IT OK TO JUST MAKE MANY GOALS THAN MAYBE A GOAL PER DAY TO ACHIEVE THE BIGGER GOAL. WELL, I WOULD SAY FOOT WHEN YOU'RE FOR WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING A BEHAVIOR CHANGE, RIGHT? IT'S NOT GOING HAPPEN OVERNIGHT RATE. SO AND THAT'S A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE BECAUSE WE LIVE IN A WORLD WHERE IT'S INSTANT GRATIFICATION, RIGHT? TOTALLY SO RESULTS LIKE NOW. YEAH, YOU WANT SOMETHING YOU GO IN YOUR APP. IS THAT YOUR HOUSE? THE NEXT DAY? THAT'S NOT HOW IT WORKS WHEN IT COMES ANY KIND OF BEHAVIORAL CHANGE. SO REALLY, WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS, YOU KNOW, BE REALISTIC, RIGHT? AND KEEP THAT SELF-MOTIVATION GOING AND MAYBE JUST START WITH ONE OR 2 THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO RK ON AND KIND OF SEE HOW THAT GOES. AND THEN LIKE I SAID, YOU CAN ALWAYS ADD THINGS OR CHANGE THINGS IF YOU NEED TO DO TO SET THE BAR TOO HIGH BECAUSE THE NEXT GUY, THE IDEA COULD BACKFIRE ON YOU. WELL, YEAH. AND THEN YOU START TO FEEL LIKE I TOLD YOU, I CAN DO THIS ANYWAY, RIGHT? AND THEN YOU START TO FEEL LIKE ANXIOUS ABOUT IT ARE A LITTLE BIT SAD THAT YOU DIDN'T MEET YOUR SO INSTEAD OF JUST DOING THAT, ALL OR NOTHING LIKE FORGET ABOUT IT, I WANT TO DO IT ANYMORE. REALLY LOOK AT YOUR GOALS AND SAY LIKE, OKAY, MAYBE I JUST HAVE TO REVISE THIS A LITTLE BIT IF CAN MAKE PAST JANUARY 15TH. THAT'S THE GOAL. TALK ABOUT ALI DNA AND IN THE SERVICES THAT YOU GUYS PROVIDE HERE FOR OUR COMMUNITY, SURE ARE SOLELY TNA. WE PROVIDE A LOT OF DIFFERENT BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES. WE HAVE THERAPY. WE HAVE MEDICATION MANAGEMENT. WE DO. ABA THERAPY SPEECH THERAPY OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY. THE BIGGEST THING AND ALI DNA IS WE REALLY FOCUS ON THE COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH, RIGHT? SO WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH AND YOUR MENTAL HEALTH, THEY'RE DEFINITELY SO WHEN WE'RE STRUGGLING WITH A MENTAL HEALTH, THE FIRST THING I ALWAYS ASK MY PATIENTS IS OK, HOW HOW ARE WE SLEEPING? HOW WHAT IS OUR DIET LOOK LIKE? YOU KNOW, ARE WE DRINKI ENOUGH WATER? WE GETTING ENOUGH MOVEMENT RIGHT? BECAUSE THOSE THINGS CAN IMPACT. YOU KNOW, IF IF YOU DON'T GET ENOUGH SLEEP A LITTLE BIT MORE MOODY OR YOU KNOW THAT SORT OF THING. OPPOSITE N HAPPEN TO LIKE IF YOU'RE NOT HANDLING YOUR STRESS VERY WELL. YOUR ANXIETY IS INCREASED. YOU KNOW, YOU COULD START TO HAVE, YOU KNOW, HEADACHES, STOMACH ACHES, YOU KNOW, FEELING JUST LIKE MUSCLE TENSION, DIFFERENT PLACES. SO THE BIGGEST THING IS JUST TO RECOGNIZE, YOU KNOW, OUR MENTAL HEALTH IS A PART OF OUR OVERALL PHYSICAL HEALTH AND BEING ABLE TO WORK TO SORT HELP BREAK THAT STIGMA DOWN OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. YEAH, I THINK ACHIEVABLE GOALS, AT LEAST SETTING. THOSE WILL REALLY ABOUT THAT EFFORT. HE MENTIONED EVEN JUST SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS DRINKING ENOUGH WATER PER DAY. DOES HAVE ONE EXTRA GLASS. The new year is here, and many are working to better themselves. But how can we first take care of our minds when making those New Year's resolutions?January is National Mental Wellness Month — a perfect time to consider how we approach our New Year’s resolutions and the impact they have on our mental health. Misty Brueckner, a licensed clinical social worker from Elite DNA Behavioral Health, joined ABC7 to get us more on how we can support our mental well-being while reaching our new year goals.Resolutions should focus on more than just physical self-improvement; they can help foster mental health. A proactive approach to mental health is key to addressing warning signs before larger issues arise.Only 9% of New Year's resolutions actually succeed throughout the year. Resolutions fail because people set unrealistic goals, lack planning, or lose motivation due to seeking instant gratification. This struggle to uphold resolutions can lead to stress and anxiety, which negatively impacts our mental health. The method Bruecker suggests when making your resolutions is the S.M.A.R.T. goals. This stands for:Specific: The goal is clear and states what needs to be done and who is responsible.Measurable: The goal includes how progress will be measured.Achievable: The goal is realistic and attainable.Relevant: The goal is aligned with overall objectives.Time-bound: The goal has a realistic deadline. Also, don’t set a goal just because someone else told you to. You will feel best working toward these goals when you’re pursuing them for your own benefit. You should prioritize activities that make you feel fulfilled, accomplished and that align with your values. Also, Elite DNA says to remain flexible and avoid “all or nothing” thinking. Give yourself grace when you fall short.Resolutions can also help promote mental health. If you set a goal that requires being more active, that can be good for your mental well-being. In fact, Bruscker suggest rather than focusing on appearance-driven goals, which are often tied to insecurities, reframe your focus to mental health. Exercise and healthy diet can lead to positive mental impacts including improved mood, better sleep and decreased feelings of depression, anxiety and stress. For more information on Elite DNA, check out their website.WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW ABOVE!

January is National Mental Wellness Month — a perfect time to consider how we approach our New Year’s resolutions and the impact they have on our mental health. Misty Brueckner, a licensed clinical social worker from Elite DNA Behavioral Health, joined ABC7 to get us more on how we can support our mental well-being while reaching our new year goals.
Resolutions should focus on more than just physical self-improvement; they can help foster mental health. A proactive approach to mental health is key to addressing warning signs before larger issues arise.
Only 9% of New Year's resolutions actually succeed throughout the year. Resolutions fail because people set unrealistic goals, lack planning, or lose motivation due to seeking instant gratification. This struggle to uphold resolutions can lead to stress and anxiety, which negatively impacts our mental health.
The method Bruecker suggests when making your resolutions is the S.M.A.R.T. goals. This stands for:
- Specific: The goal is clear and states what needs to be done and who is responsible.
- Measurable: The goal includes how progress will be measured.
- Achievable: The goal is realistic and attainable.
- Relevant: The goal is aligned with overall objectives.
- Time-bound: The goal has a realistic deadline.
Give yourself grace when you fall short.
Resolutions can also help promote mental health.
