Cape Coral was supposed to have new traffic cameras up an running at 16 schools by now, but the city is revealing that the holidays are to blame for some of the delays.
The good news is Cape Coral said utility works is almost finished as crews will be installing the cameras this week.
The goal is to catch drivers going over the speed limit within school zones.
If a driver is caught within those limits going just 10 miles per hour over the speed limit - they will be fined $100.
Some school zone limits vary from 15 to 20 mph.
NBC2 spoke to a Cape Coral resident who said she thinks these cameras will help keep kids safe but that there is something else that needs to be done.
"They also need to pay more attention to how their signs are located on the roads, for example, at the corner of Skyline and Trafalgar. The first sign is before Trafalgar. So if I'm on Trafalgar and turning right to go down skyline, I never see that sign," Monica Stevens said.
Once these cameras are up and running, they will only operate on school days for about 30 minutes before and after school - as well as throughout the day.
Cape Coral city leaders will be going over this project on Wednesday at 9 a.m.
