The first Cold Weather Advisory ever issued for inland Lee County will be active on Thursday between 4 and 8 a.m.
The reason tomorrow morning's advisory is the first of its kind is because of the change in winter weather alerts by the National Weather Service last year.
In October 2024, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released new products for cold weather along with a consolidation of other old terms.
The goal is to improve messaging of winter weather hazards and provide better decision support.
The biggest changes are the renaming of the wind chill watches and warnings and the wind chill advisories.
Going forward, the term wind chill watch will be replaced with the term "Extreme Cold Watch". Wind chill warnings will be replaced with "Extreme Cold Warning".
Another new change is the Wind Chill Advisory will be renamed to "Cold Weather Advisory".
The hard freeze watches and warnings will be renamed and consolidated to "Freeze Watch" and "Freeze Warning".
In the case of Thursday morning's Cold Weather Advisory, the alert is being put up because of the potential of wind chill feel-like temperatures as low as 30 degrees on Thursday morning.
