One person was found dead after an RV fire in Charlotte County early Thursday morning.
Firefighters responded to the reports of the RV fire at 1:44 a.m. on Hickory Avenue, north of the intersection of Airport Road and Taylor Road.
Hickory Ave. was blocked off for hours while the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office forensics team was on the scene.
NBC2 obtained multiple 911 calls from neighbors begging for help to come after they were woken up early in the morning by an explosion.
One of the neighbors called 911, saying they had just helped the homeowner into his house hours before the fire started.
David Flint, who lives a street over, was told to evacuate his home Thursday morning and could not return until 5 a.m.
“They had said there was a guy in there, but I didn't know,” Flint said. “I didn't know for sure, and I was hoping he had gotten out, but they're telling us now he didn't.”
Flint met the neighbor living in the house a few times.
“I met him one time, like last year,” he said. “I helped him put a battery and his camper. He'd been here a long time.”
Firefighters tell our crews the flames killed someone living inside.
A Charlotte County Code enforcement officer came by earlier and said they have an open case with the homeowner who lived in the RV after his house was condemned due to this year's hurricanes.
The State Fire Marshal was also on the scene investigating.
The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.
