The Naples chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) hosted its annual Hero Luncheon on Thursday afternoon at the Ritz-Carlton Tiburon Golf Club, recognizing the service and lifesaving efforts of local first responders. The event celebrated heroes from agencies across Collier County, including Collier County EMS, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Naples Police Department (NPD) and several fire departments.
The luncheon honored actions ranging from solving a fatal hit-and-run, rescuing individuals from burning structures during storms, preventing suicides, and providing life-saving medical care. Each honoree received a medal, a plaque, and a personalized letter from U.S. Sen. Rick Scott.
“This year's recipients embody the definition of honor and service ... They are humble about their actions, which is why we feel it is essential to recognize them and their families," said Acey Edgemon, Sr., SAR’s public service committee chairman.
Honorees and Their Acts of Heroism
Some of the many who received awards include:
- Lieutenant Michael Sullivan , Collier County EMS, for saving an infant who wasn’t breathing.
- Corporal Jennifer Torres , Florida Highway Patrol, for solving a fatal hit-and-run case.
- Engineers Dennis Kerr and Shawn Robinson , members of Task Force 6 (and North Collier Fire Rescue / South Trail Fire Rescue), for rescuing individuals from a burning trailer during severe weather.
- Multiple deputies from Collier County Sheriff’s Office , including Corporals Keith Sciog and Richard Jacobs, for acts of heroism and life-saving interventions.
A Community Hero’s Story
Naples resident and retired paramedic Sheri Rapisarda was also recognized for her actions following a plane crash near the Golden Gate Parkway overpass. Rapisarda was awarded with a citizen honor for her life-saving rescue.
“I saw the flames and didn’t think twice. I just ran towards the plane, letting them know I was there to help ... It’s something deep in your blood when you’re a first responder," said Rapisarda.
Honoring Service and Patriotism
“Recognizing these men and women for protecting us means so much to our organization,” said Command Sergeant Major W. Douglas Gibbens, SAR president.
The Naples chapter, founded in 1973, remains dedicated to fostering patriotism and honoring public servants through events like the Hero Luncheon. They host the event annually.
"It is really great. I served in the Army for 35 years but never saw combat, just through a course of fate. I've not been in that position that many of these men and women have been in the lifesavers and the heroism tales that we heard today," added Gibbens.
