Marie Witton of Fort Myers dreads tax season each year because filing the necessary paperwork can cost $100 or more, depending on the complexity of the tax return.
While the 2025 tax season has arrived, the IRS has a new program that allows everyone to file their taxes for free.
It was actually a pilot project last year in the state of Florida. Now, the IRS is opening its IRS Free File to more states, and it can save people time and money.
Calum Sullivan, like many, hates the expense that can come with filing.
"I think younger people just want taxes to be easy and the process to be seamless," Sullivan said.
The IRS's direct file program is designed to do just that, and it doesn't cost anything.
"Especially if it's free. I'm going to check it out," Sullivan said.
The program allows those who make less than $84,000 a year to log on, upload their W-2s, and file directly with the IRS.
"It's not that difficult. The software walks you through it. So, I think a free service would be great," Witton said.
While it may be easy, tax expert Nelson Maldonado, with Liberty Tax Service in Fort Myers, warns that it's not for everyone.
"Those programs will allow you to do the tax return online yourself, yes, but it's not going to tell you what you can deduct or what credits you're eligible for," Maldonado said.
For that reason, he said those with higher incomes or investments should seek professional help.
"This is where it's always advisable that you speak to someone that is a tax professional that can tell you what the new tax codes are," Maldonado explained.

Folks can actually start filing their tax return today. The tax deadline is April 15, 2025.
