The Southwest Florida community is mourning the loss of a Calusa Waterkeeper Captain and a prominent advocate for the region’s waterways.
Captain Codty Pierce, whose passion for protecting local ecosystems earned him the nickname “the watchdog of our waters,” passed away on Monday, according to a Facebook post by Calusa Waterkeeper .
The environmental organization announced his death in a heartfelt statement, describing Pierce as the “heart and soul” of their mission.
Team members said his dedication to protecting Southwest Florida’s waters and his leadership made him a respected figure among environmentalists, community members and policymakers.
“There was no one like Codty—his passion for the water, his tireless work, and the generosity with which he shared his knowledge and love of nature made him a beloved figure to all who crossed his path,” Executive Director of Calusa Waterkeeper Connie Ramos-Williams wrote in the heartfelt statement.
Pierce was known for inspiring action and hope for the future of the region’s fragile ecosystems. Ramos-Williams said his ability to connect with people, from scientists to everyday citizens, left an indelible mark on those who worked with him.
“He had the rare gift of making everyone he encountered feel valued, understood, and empowered to make a difference,” Ramos-Williams added.
The organization said that Pierce’s legacy would continue to guide its efforts in protecting the region’s natural resources. The statement also acknowledged the profound loss felt by Pierce’s family, friends and colleagues.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Codty’s impact will never be forgotten, and he will be missed more than words can express,” the statement read.
Calusa Waterkeeper said they plan to honor Pierce’s memory by continuing the work he was so passionate about - advocating for clean and healthy waterways in Southwest Florida.
Pierce’s death is a significant loss for the environmental community, but his legacy will continue in the waters he worked tirelessly to protect and the countless lives he touched.
Pierce was 36 at the time of his death. Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been announced.
