>> A VERY POPULAR SPORT HERE IN FLORIDA AT ANYWHERE. REALLY THAT YOU GO. IT'S QUITE POPULAR, BUT WE'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE HERE IN FLORIDA WHERE WE GET TO PLAY EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR, INCLUDING A YESTERDAY, WHICH WAS WHEN I GOT TO PLAY. SO THIS OFFERS A RANGE OF HEALTH BENEFITS FROM IMPROVING STAMINA. HELPING YOUR HEARTS? GOOD CARDIO? THE RISK OF INJURIES LOW WHEN YOU COMPARE IT TO OTHER SPORTS OUT THERE LIKE CONTACT SPORTS, BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL, READ BE, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. SO INJURIES STILL HAPPEN, THOUGH. THIS MORNING, DOCTOR CODY MURPHY SO JOINS US FROM LEE HEALTH. GETTING US MORE ON WHAT WE CAN ALL DO TO SET UP OUR BODY FOR SUCCESS WHEN IT COMES TO GOING OUT THERE AND HITTING THE GOLF COURSES AROUND. DR. GOOD TO SEE OUR I'M GREAT. THANKS FOR HAVING WELL, WE APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE. SO YOUR GOLFER ON THE GULF ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE DOWN HERE. GOLFERS AS ONE OF THE PERKS ABOUT LIVING YEARS BECAUSE YOU CAN DO EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR. BUT WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO JUST TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE STAYING INJURY-FREE AS THEY GO OUT. PLAY GOLF. SURE. WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT IS ACTUALLY WARMING UP PROPERLY AND I DON'T MEAN GOING OUT THERE AND JUST STRETCHING ON THE STATIC NATURE, BUT RATHER. >> GETTING YOUR HEART RATE UP FIRST, RIGHT? SO MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE PROBABLY WANT TO GO FOR LIKE A QUICK WALK OR MAYBE IF YOUR OWN COURSE GET ON THE ELLIPTICAL IN THE GYM. JUST RAISE YOUR HEART RATE. THEN AFTER THAT, THERE'S ACTUALLY 2 DIFFERENT KIND OF STRETCHING. YOU CAN PERFORM ONE BEING STATIC, WHICH EVERYBODY SEES HAS TO, YOU KNOW, REACH FOR YOUR TOES. KIND OF THING THAT'S ACTUALLY BEEN SHOWN IN RESEARCH TO BE ADVERSE MUSCLE PERFORMANCE. AND WHAT WE WANT TO BE DOING IS WHAT WE CALL DYNAMIC, STRETCHING. SO THAT'S WHAT YOU WOULD SEE IF YOU'RE AT A WATCH LIKE A FOOTBALL GAME AND TO WATCH THEM GO THROUGH THEIR LINE DRILLS. AND SO THEY GOT ON THE FIELD. THAT'S BECAUSE IT'S ACTUALLY BEEN TRYING TO RESEARCH TO BE GOOD FOR MUSCLE PERFORMANCE. YOU THINK IT'S GOING TO HIT THE RANGE A LITTLE BIT BEFORE YOU GO PLAYFULLY ABSOLUTELY YEAH. BECAUSE ACTUALLY HITS THE EXACT MUSCLES YOU'LL BE USING ON THE COURSE. BUT I WOULDN'T SAY GO OUT THERE AND START SWINGING AS HARD AS YOU CAN READ IT. YOU CAN OUT THERE, RIGHT? START WITH SOME HAVE OFFICER DOING THAT WHAT CAN PLAYERS DUE TO MAINTAIN THAT COULD SWING? BECAUSE IT'S A VERY MECHANICAL, MECHANICAL THING. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, A GOLF SWING FOR, YOU KNOW. >> THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE GAME OF GOLF. IT'S MORE THAN JUST, YOU KNOW, TAKING A CLUB TO SWING IT THROUGH. I MEAN, THAT, YOU KNOW, THERE'S BUNCH OF POSITIONS YOUR BODY HAS TO GET THROUGH. GOING TO A BACKSWING FOR YOU. COME DOWN TO THREW THE BALL MOVING FORWARD. SO WHAT CAN PEOPLE DO TO MAKE SURE THEIR SWING STAYS INJURY FREE? SO I'VE ACTUALLY READ THAT THERE ARE ABOUT 70 DIFFERENT THINGS. YOU CAN FOCUS ON THE COURSE OF ABOUT 0.5 SECONDS GULF. SO THAT'S WHAT THAT'S PROBABLY WHAT MAKES IT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GOOD GOLFER, A BETTER GOLFER ON BED GOLF. YEAH, I'M THINKING I'M THINKING ABOUT ALL 70 THINGS. I THINK WHAT CAN WE DO? WELL, FLEXIBILITY IS REALLY IMPORTANT TO GET ON THE GOLF SWING. YOU ARE LIMITED IN YOUR FLEXIBILITY OF PROBABLY NOTICED STRAIGHT PEOPLE WHO HAVE GOOD FLEXIBILITY GENERALLY DON'T REALIZE HOW FLEXIBLE THERE WE FIND THE IN THE BACKSWING, TYPICALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE LIMITED WITH THAT, THEY START TO COMPENSATE, RIGHT? SO INCREASING SPINAL FLEXIBILITY AND HAVE FLEXIBILITY ARE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR MAINTENANCE OF THE GOLF SWING. THE OTHER THING I WOULD SAY IS IF YOU CAN PERFORM SOME FORM OF STRENGTH TRAINING IN THE GYM, YOU'LL HAVE TO PUT IN A LITTLE BIT LESS EFFORT IN ORDER TO PRODUCE MORE POWER. AND IF YOU CAN DO THAT, YOU'LL REDUCE YOUR INJURY RISK. OK? THAT'S INTERESTING. ONE AREA THAT I DON'T THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK OF UNTIL THEY START TO FEEL A LITTLE BIT OF THE PAIN IS THE ELBOW. WHAT ARE WHAT ARE SOME THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO TO MAKE SURE THAT THEIR ELBOW STAY NICE AND LOOSE BECAUSE YOU KNOW, IF YOU'RE IF YOU'RE HITTING THE BALL WRONG, IF YOU'RE SWINGING WRONG, YOU CAN PULL THAT ELBOW OUT AND IT REALLY HURT A LOT. SO A LOT OF TIMES OF ALL THOSE IS ACTUALLY THAT OUR MUSCLES ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN THE FORCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE REPETITIVE NATURE THAT WE PUT IT IN A GOLF. I MEAN, PEOPLE DOWN HERE PLAY 5 TIMES A SO THAT REPETITIVE NATURE CAN BOTHER. YOU. SO WHAT YOU PROBABLY WANT TO DO REGARDING ELBOW IS FIRST LIKE I SAID, PROPERLY WARM UP BEFORE YOU PLAY, BUT ALSO PROBABLY WANT TO START GETTING SOME STRENGTHENING ACTIVITIES CENTER, RIGHT? SO IF YOU HAVE LIKE A BAND, YOU WANT TO DO SOME FLEXION. SOME EXTENSION AND THEN DEFINITELY THE GULF SWING. WHAT'S IMPORTANT IS WHAT WE CALL PRO NATION AND SUPER NATION AS YOU CAN. THANK YOU. ROLL OVER THE SWING RIGHT. SO WANT TO INCREASE THE STRENGTH IN THAT MANNER, TOO. AND A LOT OF TIMES IT'S NOT ACTUALLY THE MOTION WHERE GOING INTO THE RESISTANCE. IT'S THE RETURN RECALL THAT THE CENTER CONTRACTION, WE'RE CONTROLLING THE MOTION. THAT'S WHERE MOST PEOPLE GET INJURED BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE STRENGTH. WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS KIND OF A QUESTION OF THE TOP? MY HEAD? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND SOMEONE LOOKING TO GETTING LESSONS SO THAT THEY ARE DOING THE RIGHT MECHANICS INVOLVING OF ALL SAYING I CAN'T RECOMMEND THAT ME, THERE ARE THOSE LITTLE MOMENTS THAT JUST INVOLVE THE RISKS IN THE FOREARMS AND ELBOWS AS WE TALKED ABOUT THAT, IF YOU'RE NOT DOING IT RIGHT, YOU CAN REALLY DO A LITTLE BIT OF LIGHT INTO A LOT OF IT, OF COURSE, OF DAMAGE REGARD TO THAT. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DO HAVE SOME BIT OF AN INJURY, WHAT IS THE REQUIREMENTS TO WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? I SHOULD SAY THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF STRENGTHENING YOUR MUSCLES GETTING BACK INTO SHAPE SO THAT YOU CAN GO BACK OUT TO THE COURSE AND NOT GET INJURED AGAIN. SURE. SO IF YOU'RE GETTING INJURED ON THE COURSE, MY FIRST RECOMMENDATION IS PROBABLY STOP IT THROUGH THE ENTRY BECAUSE YOU WANT TO MAKE IT WORSE THAN IT IS UPON INITIAL INSULT. RIGHT? WHEN YOU GET OFF THE COURSE SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO TRY IS THE USE OF ICE TO TRY AND REDUCE THAT INFLAMMATION. GENTLE, STRETCHING SO LONG AS IT'S NOT INCREASING YOUR SYMPTOMS. AND IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A BRACE FOR THE AREA, MIGHT ON NEWS THAT IN THE SHORT TERM JUST TO GET BY FOR A LITTLE WHILE. ALL RIGHT. IF PEOPLE WANT MORE INFORMATION ON DR CODY, MORE FEES OR JUST PHYSICAL THERAPY OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? WHERE CAN THEY GO? LEE HEALTH WEBSITE IS A GREAT SPOT. WE ALSO HAVE PHONE NUMBER. YOU CAN CALL THE FRONT DESK WHERE OUR FRONT DESK COCONUT POINT LEASES. AMAZING. AND I THINK THAT THEY DO A GREAT JOB. CHECK OUT APPOINTMENTS TO WE APPRECIATE THANKS SO MUCH FOR COMING IN. Golf is a popular sport, especially here in Florida. It offers a range of health benefits from improving stamina to helping your heart. But while the risk of injury is low when compared to other sports, they can still happen.Cody Mafrizo, a doctor of physical therapy with Lee Health, joined ABC7 to discuss what you can do to set your body up for success with golf.Golf is a slower pace, but still you can see risks of injury. It's best to warm up before starting your day on the course. A proper warmup prepares the body, increases flexibility, relaxes your muscles, and could also increase your performance. Warmups could include a jog or walk, dynamic stretches or practice swings. It's also important to cool down after playing to helps your body recover. You could use a foam roller, go for a walk or try some static stretches. So, what can you do to maintain a good golf swing? Mafrizo suggests working on your grip, stance, posture and alignment. The best way to work on your swing is to make sure you are driving from your large core muscles, not just your arms and hands. Your toe position, ball position and aim all must fit together to produce a consistent result. A physical therapist can help identify problem areas and create an exercise program to help you improve your swing. Some common golf injuries include knee injuries, sprains or strains, a disk injury or golfer’s elbow. Also, you should rest and avoid putting pressure on the injury until it’s healed. Other ways to treat an injury are to apply ice, do some gentle stretching if you’re able, and wear a brace. If the pain persists or gets worse, see a doctor. Physical therapy can help golfers recover from injuries and improve their performance. A physical therapist can also help with pain, range of motion and muscle strength. A referral from a physician is needed before starting physical therapy.
