Students in Cape Coral are preparing to host a senior prom for actual senior citizens. The students are learning lessons that transcend generations. Oasis High School students will host the prom for Gulf Coast Village residents on Jan. 27. The idea is part of a service-learning project. Recently, the students involved received a two-day sensitivity training. Students from Oasis High’s JROTC program participated. The training will help students understand and communicate with the older adults at the prom. The training involved simulations. The exercises included macular degeneration goggles, devices to understand physical limitations that seniors live with and communication strategies to simulate communicating with an older adult who may have cognitive impairments. Gulf Coast Village’s Rachel Byrd, an advanced activity professional, a CORE-certified assisted living administrator and a certified dementia practitioner explained, “We had them go through different tasks that seniors might be going through at home just to represent how difficult those things might be when you have some sort of impairment.”If you have a Positively Southwest Florida story, we would love to share it.
