Cape Coral’s first workforce-based housing development, Civitas of Cape Coral, is officially open.
Located just off Pine Island Road, the project is believed to be a solution to the city's growing demand for affordable housing.
Ahead of Thursday's ribbon-cutting ceremony, NBC2 got a look inside the new community, which combines luxury with affordability.
"Good. Because we need it. The housing prices are way too high for anybody to survive. I mean, you can't can't live off of less than 100 grand here. That's that's what I've found," Cape Coral resident Christine Heerlyn said.
For many, skyrocketing rent prices have made finding housing a challenge. Civitas offers a more accessible option, with base rents starting as low as $634 per month for certain units and ranging up to $1,800 for some three-bedroom apartments. Each unit also includes a washer and dryer.
However, Civitas has specific eligibility requirements. Natalie Espinosa, the property manager, explained how income and household size determine the cost of rent.
“For the 30% units, for example, we’re offering them at $634 a month. But if you have three people living in the home, your combined income can’t exceed $25,000. That same unit for someone earning $41,000 might cost closer to $1,400 a month,” Espinosa said.
Applications to qualify for this affordable housing community are now open. Civitas of Cape Coral, located along Civitas Court, is ready to provide much-needed relief for renters.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Thursday.
