A Charlotte County man named Benjamin Reyes III was arrested for hijacking a woman's car Wednesday night.
Reyes' arrest affidavit stated, "The perpetrator, Benjamin Reyes III, hijacked the victim's 1998 Nissan Maxima from the passenger seat. In an overt effort to crash the vehicle at a high rate of speed while screaming, he would kill her on Duncan Road, Punta Gorda, Charlotte County, Florida. The victim was in fear for her life. This event was witnessed by law enforcement while actively transpiring."
A deputy spotted a Nissan Maxima swerving down Duncan Road.
Deputies said Reyes hijacked the car from the passenger seat, attempting to crash it at high speed. They observed him controlling the vehicle’s steering, gears, gas and brake pedals.
The deputy stopped the car at Duncan and Regent, where the victim, injured and distressed, told deputies Reyes and her had gotten into a fight, stolen her phone, punched her, and threatened her life.
Reyes was arrested, and it was revealed he had an outstanding warrant for grand theft of a vehicle. A convicted felon, Reyes had previously served time for stealing a car and a firearm.
