When the light turns green, it doesn't always mean go
"I find this the worst intersection in all of Fort Myers," said Steven Efken a Fort Myers resident.
Steven and hundreds of others feel the pressure every time he drives along Colonial Boulevard.
"There's too much traffic, the roads are always under construction, you can't move, you're stuck in for hours in traffic, and I just do not like that," said Efken.
He's talking about the many changes because of the Florida Department of Transportation's Diverging Diamond Project.
"I don't know what's wrong with the old way. It seemed to work as best it could in the old way," he added.
Drivers are confused where to stop, many end up in the middle of the intersection, unable to move, then they block the other side with a green light.
Fort Myers Police Department caught a driver stopping in the middle of the intersection last week on their dashcam, the car was blocking oncoming traffic. Officer Ryan Hernandez-Beiner pulled that driver over.
"Almost on a daily basis. I can pull over three or four people between 6 and 10 for blocking an intersection, the biggest area is around Colonial I-75," said Hernandez-Beiner.
Stopping in the middle of an intersection is against the law in the sate of Florida, it also puts drivers in no mans land.
"We're all trying to get somewhere, we're all trying to get to some place and unfortunately, people get aggravated very easily around here, and it can lead to bad things happening," said he added.
FDOT told NBC2/ABC7 that they are aware of the confusion along Colonial Blvd near 1-75, the project is expected to be completed in the spring.
"The implementation of the continuous flow intersection and the redirected crossing U-turn, crews will focus, on completing the final tasks such as asphalt paving, striping, and signage," said Janella Newsome.
All to help drivers be as safe as possible.
We have those in Miami, and it it works, it seems crazy, but it does work," said Efken. "So I do think eventually if you use it enough, you'll figure it out."
Fort Myers Police says if you do get caught "blocking the box," you will face a fine of $163, and three points on your license.
