UPDATE: Wanted sex offender opened fire on deputies in traffic stop near Arcadia

FOX 4 has determined the man who opened fire on deputies and was subsequently killed near Arcadia Saturday morning had a lengthy criminal history in Wisconsin and Florida, and some of those crimes were sex crimes connected to children.

In fact, deputies say Matthew Steven Rollie had an active warrant out of Forsyth County, Georgia, where he was wanted on a charge of Enticing a Child for Indecent Purposes. Deputies had actually been searching for him since Friday afternoon, but they hadn't had any success... until Saturday morning.

Just past 2:00am, 2 DeSoto County deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of State Road 72 between Thigpen Road and Addison Avenue.

Deputies say the vehicle had 2 people inside, and they believed the passenger was Rollie.

Deputies say, while they were confirming his identity, Rollie armed himself with a firearm inside of the vehicle and began firing at the deputies, striking one of the deputies multiple times.

The DeSoto County Sheriff's Office said deputies returned fire and killed Rollie.

The deputy who was injured is being treated and is recovering at this time, the sheriff's office has not identified him or her.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating this shooting, which is standard practice in any law enforcement shooting.

A DeSoto County Sheriff Deputy was wounded, and suspect is dead after a Saturday morning deputy involved shooting in Arcadia.

The DeSoto County Sheriff Office says the shooting occurred in the area of State Road 72 near Crown Roofing.

There is no information on the deputy's condition at this time.

The sheriff's office said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called in to investigate; this is standard procedure in any deputy-involved shooting.
