Lee Health's new state-of-the-art health care campus celebrated breaking ground on Monday.
People from across the community gathered at the 53-acre site at the intersection of Colonial and Challenger boulevards.
Lee Health unveiled images and video footage showcasing what the future campus will look like.
The first phase of construction is slated for completion in 2028.
According to Lee Health, the campus will feature an acute care hospital with up to 168 beds, including 24 intensive care unit beds, a 44-bed emergency department, 10 inpatient operating rooms and more.
The release states the facility has been designed with resiliency in mind, including a generator and hurricane-resistant construction.
Lee Health states the campus will create jobs, stimulate economic growth and ensure long-term health care access for the rapidly expanding Fort Myers population.
Lee Memorial Hospital will continue to provide essential services, including emergency care, inpatient beds and surgical services until the new hospital is fully operational, according to the release.
