Law enforcement agencies and the family of fallen Charlotte County Sergeant Elio Diaz gathered Tuesday morning to lay a memorial brick in his honor.
The ceremony took place at the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy, the same place Diaz graduated from basic law enforcement in September 2013.
"Everybody knew him and he always brought a positive light to everybody," said Todd Everly, the senior director of the Southwest Florida Public Service Academy.
Diaz was shot and killed last month during a traffic stop, outside a Chevron gas station off U.S. 41., Everly says that moment is still fresh on everyone's mind.
"I think over the past month, a lot has been thrown at them and they're trying to make that adjustment," Everly said.
Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell and Diaz's family were at Tuesday's ceremony, the sheriff told NBC2 that they're still grieving.
"Elio was a great family man, he was very involved with his children," said Prummell. "He and his wife were best friends and you know we're there for him, and we're always going to be there for him."
His message is to just follow the law.
"We don't get it right every time, we're human beings too, but the vast majority of our people are really good people, and they're in it for the right things, and they're doing the right thing," Prummell told NBC2.
Prummell is thankful for the support that the community has been giving to the sheriff's office and helping Diaz's family with various fundraisers.
