A man has been sentenced for multiple charges following a shootout with law enforcement after he shot his ex-girlfriend.
The incident happened in October 2023 when Daniel Jacob Dunn broke into his ex-girlfriend's Lee County home, shot her and left for Charlotte County. Officials said she survived the shooting.
According to the state attorney's office, Dunn barricaded himself inside his Charlotte County home.
Lee County and Charlotte County deputies responded alongside SWAT teams to the standoff and tried to get Dunn to surrender through negotiations.
After several hours, the SWAT team deployed gas into the manufactured home. According to the news release, Dunn then started shooting at law enforcement, and they fired back.
Two law enforcement officers were injured, and Dunn was shot and wounded as well. Dunn was taken to a hospital while in custody.
Dunn was found guilty and sentenced to 40 years in prison as a habitual felony offender for charges related to the shootout. Officials said he was also sentenced to 40 years earlier this month for the Lee County charges following the shooting in Fort Myers.
In the Charlotte County case, Dunn was sentenced as follows:
- Counts 1-10: aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer — 30 years in prison on each count
- Count 11-12: aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer (discharge of a firearm) — 40 years in prison with a 20-year minimum/mandatory on each count
- Counts 13-14: Shooting at/into an occupied vessel/aircraft/vehicle — 30 years in prison on each count
- Count 15: Resisting an officer with violence — 10 years in prison
As for the Lee County case, he was sentenced as follows:
- Count 1: Attempted first-degree murder with a firearm — 40 years in prison with a 25-year minimum/mandatory
- Count 2: First-degree burglary while armed — 40 years in prison with a 25-year minimum/mandatory
- Count 3: Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (actual possession) — 30 years in prison with a three-year minimum/mandatory.
The state attorney's office said all of the charges will be served concurrently. Forfeiture of all seized firearms, weapons and ammo was ordered.
Restitution to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office was also ordered and reserved, according to the news release.
