The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife has revealed that the cause of death for eaglets E24 and E25 was HPAI, also known as bird flu.
CROW representatives confirmed on Thursday that the eaglets died from bird flu, which is a strain of influenza that can wipe out entire flocks within days.
The Southwest Florida Eagle Cam , by Dick Pritchett Real Estate, shared the sudden passing of Eaglet E24 on Sunday.
Crews with legal authorization removed E24 from the nest while leaving the remaining birds within the nest for stress.
According to CROW, E25 did not appear to have symptoms of stress and showed signs of being fed by its parents. On Tuesday, E25 died due to seizures and falling out of the nest like E24.
Removing eagles from the nest without present symptoms is not allowed, according to CROW.
CROW does not operate on a 24-hour cycle, though volunteers do operate seven days a week.
It is still unclear how the eaglets caught the flu, but speculation points toward the consumption of an infected bird.
CROW said there are no signs that the eagle's parents are contaminated, and they can not be removed without present symptoms.
