We’re in the middle of cold and flu season and it’s taking a toll on many people's immune systems.
“We've been seeing kind of a mix of different viruses, between influenza A, influenza B, and COVID. Those are kind of like the main ones that we see, but there's definitely a lot of various viruses that have been going around Southwest Florida,” said Ethan Ramirez, co-chief resident of the FSU Family Medicine program at Lee Health.
Ramirez said there are a lot more flu cases along our Gulf Coast this year.
“Just in the local area, the number of flu cases is up three times for December compared to December last year,” said Ramirez.
So, we wanted to get you more information on how to keep the germs away. From the basics of washing your hands and staying away from sick people to taking the doctor’s orders one step further and supporting your immune system.
Courtney Krehling is the owner of Naples Elderberry. She said her natural syrup is packed with ingredients to prevent you from getting sick.
“My elderberry syrup is made with elderberries, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, honey and lemon. So, you're getting benefits from all those ingredients. And they are all organic. So yeah, it's a powerhouse immune support,” said Krehling.
You can also consume honey and ginger to give your immune system a boost. Not only are they ingredients in Krehling's elderberry syrup, but they’re also doctor-approved.
“Vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, those are all helpful. And then there's some natural remedies that you can take too if you do get sick, which is like honey, ginger, peppermint, those sort of things have been shown to be soothing for symptoms,” said Ramirez.
If you're not into sweet stuff when you're sick, Ramirez suggests consuming bone broth.
“It has a bit more protein in it, which can help recovery,” said Ramirez.
