A man was arrested for trying to cash a fraudulent check at a Fifth Third Bank in Naples Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Naples Police Department, at approximately 3 p.m., an officer was dispatched to the bank along 9th Street North.
The report states when the officer arrived at the scene, he saw someone point at a man, later identified as Humberto Dequeralta Alvarez Lopez, 60.
The officer approached Lopez and asked him for identification. The officer siad Lopez lowered his hand to a knife clipped on his pant pocket.
The officer told him not to grab the knife and grabbed Lopez's arms.
The report states Lopez became aggressive and resisted, coming towards the officer. The officer said Lopez continued to resist by tensing and flaring his arms until more units arrived.
Lopez was eventually handcuffed after the struggle and taken to Naples Community Hospital due to his elevated heart rate.
The teller who helped Lopez's counter transaction said Lopez told them he did not have a Fifth Third bank account but wanted to cash the check as payment for work he did in Naples.
Lopez said he lived in Texas and showed a Texas driver's license with a similar image and a name that looked familiar to the teller.
According to the NPD report, the teller recognized the check from a "Be on the lookout (BOLO)" email from other branches alerting fake checks.
NPD said Lopez even identified himself as Christian Amador Lopez, however, his real name was later revealed to be Humberto Dequeralta Alvarez Lopez with a Miami address.
According to the report, Lopez also had an active warrant with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in Colorado Springs.
Lopez is facing the following charges:
- Resisting an Officer with and without violence
- Uttering a forged instrument
- Possession of a controlled substance
- Possession of a fraudulent driver’s license
- Knowingly providing false information to a law enforcement officer
- Fugitive warrant – out of state
