North Fort Myers couple recovering after losing two homes in three years
A man is in the hospital with severe burns and his wife is also recovering after their mobile home caught on fire in North Fort Myers.
The couple's good friend, Dan Kieger, exclusively told ABC7 about their story.
"They're very special people," Kieger said. "They're very loving."
Kieger shared David and Linda Johnson's heartbreaking story.
Their Lake Fairways home in North Fort Myers went up in flames about a week ago. ABC7 captured the aftermath of the fire with pieces of the home lying on the ground.
What's even more scary, David and Linda were inside the home when the fire started.
"It's unimaginable," Kieger said. "What that must have been like."
A deputy saved David's life, pulling him out of the home. Kieger said David broke his leg during the rescue. Part of his other leg is already gone from a rare blood disorder he developed a few years ago.
Kieger said David's still recovering in the hospital from severe burns, but he's just grateful he's still here.
"I want to thank the fire and police that pulled David out of the house because we know the result would have been much more horrific than what it is," Kieger said.
Dan said David's wife, Linda, is out of the hospital but is still recovering, too.
"She had some burns that she's recovering from," Kieger said. "She had some burn smoke inhalation damage on her lungs that she's recovering from that, a blood clot."
The worst part of their story is this isn't the first time the couple has lost a home.
"They lost their house in Indian Creek to Hurricane Ian," Kieger said. Now they lost this house in this horrific fire last week, and it's heartbreaking."
Kieger said now all he can do is pray, be there for his friends, and wait for them to get better.
