A man has been arrested more than a year after a crash that left another driver seriously injured in Cape Coral.
The Cape Coral Police Department arrested Devin Taylor Hemminger, 29, in connection to a DUI crash from September 2023.
Officers responded to a crash at the intersection of Tropicana Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard on Sept. 15 around 9:40 p.m.
CCPD said Hemminger was driving east on Tropicana Pkwy. and failed to stop at a stop sign before colliding with a car heading northbound on Santa Barbara Blvd.
The victim's vehicle reportedly spun before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes.
CCPD said the victim was accompanied by his daughter, a minor who was unharmed during the incident. The victim reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Hemminger's vehicle came to a stop in the front yard of a house on Tropicana Pkwy. E.
Witnesses on the scene were providing aid to the victim as Hemminger was reportedly on the phone, attempting to arrange a ride.
Officers arrived at the scene before Hemminger could leave the scene. CCPD said they noticed several signs of impairment.
Investigations determined that Hemminger was driving under the influence, according to the press release, at the time of the crash - resulting in serious injuries to the victim and significant property damage.
A warrant request was submitted to the State Attorney's Office, which was approved.
On December 18, 2024, Hemminger was arrested and is facing the following charges:
- One count of DUI with serious bodily injury
- Two counts of DUI with damage to person or property
The CCPD press release noted that some cases may take time, but that does not mean they are not being investigated.
"Gathering evidence through search warrants, subpoenas, and other investigative means can be necessary when developing a solid case that will be upheld in a court of law," CCPD's press release said.
